Amazon.com Launches Movie Download Service

7 09 2006

Amazon.com will launch Amazon Unbox will launch today, the Seattle Times has reported, as was widely suspected and reported on for the past couple weeks or so.

Amazon Unbox is live here. The movie download price looks comparable to the DVD price and allows storage on 2 PCs and 2 portable video players.

As I’ve already explained here, the movie experience is far superior on the big screen in the living room.  With the trifecta of comparable pricing, having to endure the download process and fewer viewing options, it would seem something has to give. That being said, it will be interesting to watch Amazon.com and Apple duke it out for download domination on the computer.

With the announcement of the iTV, Apple’s recognising that it has to display the video you’re downloading from iTunes Store on your big-screen TV in your living room. Apple doesn’t have the content rights to do that in a big way, but it’s definitely coming.
